I started using Linux instead of Windows 11 because I wanted more control over what programs are running on my system. As someone who is actively pursuing a career in Information Technology, I quickly realized that Linux is incredibly lightweight and will run on nearly every system, but it is a very powerful learning tool. It forces me to understand how an operating system works under the hood, and instead of a operating system controlling how each file and software works, I am the one who controls the file system and the networking of each software.
I believe that Windows is great for playing video games and for general usage, however I am able to better utilize my computer with Linux installed because it preforms better in certain tasks, those being productivity, scripting, and setting up servers. Linux gives me a lot of flexibility to create the enviroment that I want to work in, and it allows me to troubleshoot any issues that I run into via terminal instead of relying on the inconsistant user-interface Microsoft offers on their Windows enviroment. I also like the fact that Linux is open-source and is driven by the community for the community. This allows me to always learn new software that comes out and I have the freedom to modify programs.
I started learning how to use Linux in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, and my first distro of linux I had went with was Fedora. I believe that learning Fedora was an excellent first distribution for learning because it didn't hide any of the technical details, Fedora encouraged me to interact directly with the system using Terminal. Fedora is backed by Red Hat Linux, which transfers a lot of skills to enterprise systems within Information Technology environments. In 2023 I had switched to using Linux Mint, which installs a lot of codecs and drivers for me. It is also an incredibly lightwight distrobution which was great back then because my laptop contained specifications dating all the way back from 2013. Linux Mint allows me to get everything done, however Fedora felt like a playground.
